The Qatar Science Festival, the first-of-its-kind event in the region, will be held in Doha in January 2012, officials said yesterday.
The festival is being organised by The Planners, an event management company, and consultancy services agency Mission, in collaboration with the internationally-renowned Genoa Science Festival.
The event has been planned with the intention of positioning Qatar as a platform for scientific endeavours and a centre that promotes science-based knowledge, an official said.
“By hosting the global event, we are opening the doors for Arab and International scientists to present their discoveries and achievements. The scale and activities associated with the event will also result in multiple community involvement projects and awareness among members of the general public,” the official said.
The objective of holding the Qatar Science Festival is to provide the community with an opportunity to engage themselves in initiatives that promote science.
The agreement to hold the festival was signed by Marianne Ayache, managing director of The Planners; Manuela Arata, chairperson of Associazone Festival Della Scienza, and Khaled al-Mohannadi, chief executive officer of Mission.
Ayache said: “The Planners are delighted to initiate this event. The festival is going to be one of the largest science related events on the 2012 calendar. It will be an event of high significance and the next 12 months will be busy with complex planning, multiple engagements and networking, all aimed at the success of the event.”
She said the festival will include a series of seminars, exhibitions, workshops and conferences, and as part of the festival Qatar will have the opportunity to hear some of the Nobel Prize winners.
Arata said: “The Genoa Festival of Science is celebrated globally as a reference point for the dissemination of science. Closely linked to the city of Genoa and the Liguria region, the festival is an event with an inherent international character.”
Al-Mohannadi said: “We are proud that such an event is being brought to Qatar. As a nation we are totally committed to reviving the region’s scientific heritage.”
